Scammed in Indonesia: How to Freeze the Money and Report It

Indonesia

If you've just realised you've sent money to a scammer, act now rather than finish reading this page. Indonesia has a real, government-run mechanism built for exactly this, and it genuinely works when triggered quickly — the numbers behind it are public and verifiable, not a promise.

The short answer

Indonesia's Financial Services Authority (OJK) runs the Indonesia Anti-Scam Centre (IASC), a coordination hub launched in November 2024 that can instruct banks and e-wallets to freeze a scam-linked account in near-real-time. This isn't a vague promise — as of August 2026, OJK reports having blocked over 600,000 scam-linked accounts, secured more than Rp723 billion, and actually returned over Rp204 billion to victims. The first move matters most: call your bank's fraud line immediately, and file a report with IASC directly at iasc.ojk.go.id. We won't tell you recovery is guaranteed for every case — it isn't — but Indonesia's mechanism has a real, publicly documented track record behind it, which is more than can be said everywhere in the region.

Is this you?

This page covers realising you've sent money to a scam in Indonesia — an online purchase, an investment scheme, a romance scam, or any transfer you now believe was fraudulent — and what to do about it.

  • You've just transferred money to someone or something you now believe was a scam.
  • You're not sure whether Indonesian banks can actually freeze a transfer.
  • Someone has asked you to send money to an account and you want to check it first.
  • Some time has already passed and you're not sure if it's too late.
  • You need this explained in English, quickly, without the run-around.

Whichever applies, speed genuinely matters — read the first two steps now, even before finishing the rest of this page.

What happens next

  1. Call your bank's fraud line immediately, and file with IASC

Call the fraud or customer-service number on your card or in your banking app straight away, and clearly say you believe you've been scammed and want the transfer blocked. In parallel, file a report directly with the Indonesia Anti-Scam Centre at iasc.ojk.go.id — OJK's own coordination hub with banks and e-wallets, built specifically to act on reports like this fast.

  2. We help you file a complete report, in the right place

IASC handles bank-transfer and e-wallet scams; Patroli Siber (Bareskrim Polri's Cyber Crime Directorate) is the right channel for formal criminal complaints, particularly where hacking or account takeover is involved rather than a straightforward transfer. We help make sure your case goes to the right place the first time, with the transaction records and evidence organised properly.

  3. We check the receiving account, if you haven't sent the money yet

If you're being asked to send money and something feels off, CekRekening.id (run by Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs) lets you check whether an account has already been flagged as fraudulent before you transfer anything. Prevention is genuinely the best outcome, and we'll help you check before you send if you reach us in time.

  4. We explain what a freeze actually means, honestly

Under OJK's anti-fraud regulation (POJK 12/2024), banks are required to run dedicated fraud-response teams that coordinate with IASC on freeze requests. A freeze stops the money moving further — whether it's ultimately returned to you depends on whether it's still there when the freeze takes effect, and on the case being processed through IASC's system. We explain honestly where your case stands rather than promise more than the system can deliver.

  5. We coordinate the case in your language

Banking fraud lines and IASC's process are conducted in Indonesian. We help make sure nothing is lost in translation, that your report is complete and clear, and that you understand what's happening at each stage.

  6. We stay with the case through to resolution

Some cases resolve within weeks; others, particularly larger or more complex ones, take longer. We manage the process and keep you honestly informed about realistic timelines and outcomes as your case actually develops.

This describes Indonesia's process specifically. Fraud-reporting mechanisms and recovery odds differ substantially between Indonesia, Thailand and Cambodia — do not assume what applies in one country applies in another.

What this costs — ours and Indonesia's, separated

Doing it yourself vs doing it with us

The first call and the initial IASC report are things you can and should do immediately, yourself — here's honestly where it gets harder from there.

On your ownWith Connect Consult
Calling your bank and filing the initial IASC reportEntirely doable alone — do this immediately, before anything elseSame advice we'd give: act first, then bring us in for what follows
Getting the report to the right channel and filed completelyEasy to send to the wrong place or file incompletely, especially in a second languageWe make sure it goes to the right place, complete, the first time
Following an Indonesian-language process under pressureGenuinely difficult if your Indonesian isn't fluentWe coordinate the whole process in your language
Staying informed as the case moves through IASC or the policeEasy to lose track of where things standOne point of contact managing the whole picture

The honest version

Calling your bank and filing with IASC right away is exactly the right first move, and you don't need us for that. Where it gets harder is navigating an Indonesian-language process under pressure, making sure the report goes to the right channel (IASC versus Patroli Siber), and following the case through properly.

Common questions

Can Indonesian banks actually freeze a scam transfer?

Yes — under OJK's anti-fraud regulation (POJK 12/2024), banks run dedicated fraud-response teams that coordinate with the Indonesia Anti-Scam Centre on freeze requests. This has a real, publicly reported track record: over 600,000 accounts blocked and over Rp204 billion actually returned to victims as of August 2026.

What is the Indonesia Anti-Scam Centre (IASC)?

A coordination hub run by OJK, Indonesia's Financial Services Authority, launched in November 2024. Report directly at iasc.ojk.go.id — it's the fastest route to a bank or e-wallet freeze.

How fast do I need to act?

Immediately. Call your bank's fraud line and file with IASC before doing anything else, including reading the rest of this page. Every source we checked agrees speed is the single biggest factor within your control, even though we can't cite an exact cutoff time.

Will I actually get my money back?

We can't promise that for every case, but Indonesia's system has genuinely returned real money to real victims — over Rp204 billion as of August 2026, which is public, sourced data, not a marketing claim. Whether your case is one of them depends on how quickly it's reported and whether the funds are still there when the freeze takes effect.

Can I check an account before I send money?

Yes — CekRekening.id, run by Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, lets you check whether an account has already been flagged as fraudulent. If you're not sure about a transfer, check first.

Should I report to IASC or the police?

IASC (iasc.ojk.go.id) is the right first stop for bank-transfer or e-wallet scams. Patroli Siber, Bareskrim Polri's cyber crime portal, is the right channel for formal criminal complaints, especially where hacking or account takeover is involved rather than a straightforward transfer. We help make sure your case goes to the right one.

Can you guarantee recovery of my funds?

No — and be cautious of anyone who claims they can for every case. What we can do is make sure your report is filed fast, completely, and in the right place, and manage the case honestly from there.

Are you an Indonesian law firm?

No. Connect Consult is a legal-services concierge. Where formal legal representation is needed, it's handled by counsel licensed to practise in Indonesia, whom we instruct and manage — we hold your relationship and coordinate the case in your language throughout.

Connect Consult is a legal-services concierge for foreigners in South East Asia. We are not an Indonesian law firm and we do not hold an Indonesian legal practising licence. Where formal legal representation is needed, it is provided by counsel licensed to practise in Indonesia — instructed, briefed and managed by us, with their fee quoted to you before you instruct them. We never guarantee an outcome; freeze, investigation and recovery decisions rest with Indonesian banks, OJK, the police and the courts.
